How Far We Should Go for Chessed

This is from the book "Middos -- Inspiration, Stories and Practical Advice Based on Tomer Devorah" by Rebbetzin S. Feldbrand

The Yetzer Hara wages war against those who seek to give charity. It says, “Don’t give so much; don’t rush into it. Give yourself time to think it over before you hand over such a large sum.” It is not easy to resist him.

Chessed often requires a large measure of Binah. First, one faces an intense battle with the yetzer hara, who attempts to prevent the deed. One must circumvent barriers set up by those who resist accepting charity outright.

A man wished to help his destitute neighbor. He informed him that a grocer was ready to sell a shipment of tuna at half price because the cans had been damaged. He offered to share the shipment. The neighbor happily agreed. The man bought several cases of tuna and bashed each can with a hammer before delivering the damaged goods to his neighbor.
