10 thoughts for Chanuka

Daniella Lejtman sent me the following.

Here's 10 thoughts from my teacher, Mrs. Feder.
  1. Chanuka is about the fight between two ideologies, Hellenism, or the worship of the body, and Judaism.
  2. Why did the Maccabim bother to light the menorah? Why didn’t they wait until it could be done properly? Because when you have an opportunity to do something, you do it.
  3. Always be working on something.
  4. The value of one time is unbelievable. Even if you hold yourself back from doing whatever it is, just once, that it incredible.
  5. The Greeks wanted Judaism to be one aspect of our lives, but not our whole lives. The Maccabim fought for Judaism to be shemen zayis zach; the purest, least diluted possible Judaism.
  6. The package of Jewish pride. We don’t have to apologize for who we are.
  7. For 8 days, pick one aspect your life, and do it Mehadrin Min HaMehadrin.
  8. What were the Maccabim thinking? They were so little, unarmed and untrained against the massive Greek army? Here’s what they were thinking: We have no choice. But we’re going to do it anyway. HaShem will take over. And once you decide you have no other choice, something supernatural happens.
  9. These are the days of “8”. These are days that supernatural becomes natural.
  10. If you stand your ground, you’ll find your way. Be who you are, and stand up for what’s right.
