I recently listened to a shiur by Mrs. Smiles about Parshas
Bereshis, called “Guidelines for Greatness”. http://www.naaleh.com/viewclass/2261/single/
The shiur was about
the first Rashi in the Torah:
Mrs. Smiles spoke
about several ideas from this Rashi, but I especially liked one of them, from
the Lev Shalom – R’ Shalom Schwadron zt”l.
A משנה in פרקי אבות פרק ג' says: “חביב אדם שנברא בצלם, חיבה יתירה נודעת לו שנברא בצלם, שנאמר (בראשית ט':ו') "כי בצלם א-לוקים עשה את האדם" ”
If you have $10,000 under your mattress but you don’t know it’s there,
you’re not rich! So too, we have to know
that we have a צלם א-לקים. This knowledge is
something that Hashem innately puts into us.
But a Jew has an extra aspect –we are בנים למקום,
and we know it – “חיבה יתירה נודעת להם שנקראו בנים למקום” and we were given the special gift of
Torah – כלי חמדה.
R’ Schwadron says,
when a person understands that he’s special and gifted, then he acts
differently; he tries to utilize the gift.
Each and every one of us has the special gift of the צלם א-לקים and we have a Torah that directs us how to live in Hashem’s
image. All of this is hinted to in the
first Rashi. כח מעשיו הגיד לעמו
literally means Hashem told us the greatness of His acts – but it can also be explained
as follows: הקב"ה showed us the power of those who are created in His image –
what we can accomplish! כח מעשיו – the koach,
potential, in מעשיו – Hashem’s creations. The story of the אבות
tells us what we can accomplish when we know this. מתי יגיעו מעשי למעשי אבותי. The goal is for us to
realize our potential.
The first Rashi in
the Torah – even before we talk about Mitzvos – is telling us how much Hashem
has invested in each and every one of us.
This is showing us the right mindset with which to approach Torah.
The אמרי חיים says that the מדרש
about the debate among the מלאכים about whether or not to create man, was
because our entire lives we are בספק – are we going to stand up to the נסיונות and reach our שלימות/potential or not? We never know if it was כדאי
to create us or not, because we’re always in a state of development. At every moment – are we going to fulfill our
potential? That’s the challenge we have.
Hashem has given us
a tremendous amount – are we utilizing what we have, or not? Are we living up
to our potential or not? To guide us in
this struggle, Hashem gave us instructions – Mitzvos – to transform the גשמיות into a vehicle for רוחניות. The אבות הקדושים
accomplished this, and they are
our role models. משה רבינו
was originally called an איש מצרי, and at the end of the Torah was called איש א-לקים.
Are we able to be כח מעשיו? Are we a model of what
it means to be created בצלם א-לקים?
